Kellar, born Heinrich Keller in Erie, Pennsylvania, was known as the Dean of American Magicians. He stayed at the top of American stage magic until his retirement in 1908, when he publicly handed his mantle to Howard Thurston. The poster belongs to a documented series of Kellar advertising lithographs that runs from the 1890s into the early 1900s.

On the poster

The man in the chair holds his own severed head at arm's length, and the head also floats in a radiant blue halo above his body.
