cheret-au-printemps-etrennes-1905
Jules Chéret Au Printemps 1905 | Vintage Advertising Poster

A Harlequin in olive-green and orange leaps across the foreground, arms flung wide, alongside a golden-haired Cherette in a saturated red dress. To her right, a smaller commedia dell'arte figure in white and yellow holds flowers. Above them, a child's face peers from behind a burst of yellow foliage, and a tiny red jester juggles at the upper corner. At the base, scattered Etrennes gifts, a hobby horse, a tambourine, a rattle, and wrapped toys, tumble across the cream ground. Behind the figures, Chéret's graduated slate-blue wash bleeds warmly into the paper stock.

Jules Chéret (1836–1932) designed this poster in 1905 for the Parisian department store Au Printemps, advertising the store's Etrennes season: the French tradition of New Year gift-giving that was, by the early 1900s, one of the major trading events in the Parisian calendar. Au Printemps, founded on Boulevard Haussmann in 1865 by Jules Jaluzot, had commissioned Chéret through the 1880s and 1890s, and this late work belongs to the same extended relationship. The poster was lithographed at Imprimerie Chaix, whose Ateliers Chéret bore the artist's name, using his own multi-stone chromolithographic process. By 1905 Chéret was the grand old man of French poster art, recipient of the Légion d'honneur and widely credited as the father of the modern poster.

The figures are instantly recognisable as Chérettes: the joyful, theatrically costumed characters, drawn from the Commedia dell'Arte and from the Rococo painters Watteau and Fragonard, who populate poster after poster across his four-decade career. The bold blackletter headline and flowing cursive script at the foot are among the most confident examples of Belle Epoque display typography in the retail advertising canon.

Reproduced as an archival print on 200gsm Enhanced Matte Fine Art Paper. A natural choice for those drawn to Belle Epoque graphic design, the history of Parisian retail culture, or the long tradition of theatrical imagery that Chéret transformed into street art.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0994/1139/4937/files/Advertising-AuPrintemps-EtrennesHarlequin-1906.jpg?v=1786629670
